This is a really common question.
Any vehicle making compensation requires a dot number. Any vehicle over !0,001 pounds (total possible weight combined).
Any vehicle carrying more than 8 passengers requires a dot number.
Most common dot users are:
Farm
Gravel
Landscape
Construction
Tools
Produce
Freight
Buses
There is so much solicitation regarding dot that most people avoid or don't know what is actually required. Its important to know so that you are not cited and hurt your TDS/safety rating or raise your insurance costs.
The only requirements:
Update your dot within 12 months of obtaining, and then every two years to remain active and in compliance.
If you have an MC, get insurance within 30 days and keep insurance on. If you go a year without having insurance and do not close the dot, you will lose the authority and hurt your TDS score very badly.
If you travel out of state, pay your UCR once a year.
If you have a CDL, do a once-a-year dot medical and keep a copy.
If you have employees and are over CDL weight, register in FMCSA clearinghouse. (Free)
Anytime you renew or close your dot number, you receive a tracking number within the same day. Within 72 hours you receive a copy of the government registration either showing "record inactive" or showing the date of renewal under MCS 150 form date.
We will provide via email the proper links to checking your registration through an official website link with FMCSA.
